What's happening in Nigeria?
Nigeria is the most populated country in Africa and it has the highest rate of poverty and social vices.
Studies have shown that most youths engage in social vices due to negligence by parent and broken home. Lack of parental care, supervision and attention are also major reasons.
Dereliction of the military and the misuse of power, for example, is the brutality of police and harassment by SARS has contributed to youths engaging in social vices eg cultism so as to protect themselves from being killed or harassed by the military.
Selfishness, a Non-challant attitude and greediness by the government has contributed greatly to the poor economic status of Nigeria
The social vices are also a result of peer pressure, they change their behaviours, values to conform to those of the influencing group or individuals.
The social vices include;
Prostitution: most ladies engage in indiscriminate sexual activities with someone who is not their spouse or friend in exchange for immediate payment in money or any other values. Ladies engage in prostitution through influences by their friends and the need to feed themselves and their families, it is regarded as a faster means of making money, these put their lives at risk of being killed or used for rituals by a desperate person in search of money without working for it.
Indecent dressing: peer pressure, poor parenting, foreign influence, covetousness, and the wrong use of the internet. The acts of indecent dressings have resulted in sexual harassment of ladies and the increased rate of rape, and contraction sexual diseases and unwanted pregnancy and abortion.
cultism: cultism has become a threat to peace and security in society, cultists engage in other activities such as picking a pocket, Hoologalism, gambling, thuggery, smoking, robbery, drug addicts, etc.
Solutions to the social vices in Nigeria
Close monitoring and time should be given to children by parents, these help them to train their children and to be aware of the friends they keep and how to educate them on the dangers of immoral acts and influence from friends.
Children should be taught the moral values and the word of God, this is the best solution, teaching them the word of God and how to talk to God always and love him wholeheartedly.
Another solution is that the government should organize forums that will enlighten the students about the dangers associated with social vices.
